On September 12, 2024, Polaris Dawn rewrote the textbooks on space once again. Jared Isaacman and Sarah Gillis became the first private astronauts to perform a spacewalk during their five-day mission. But it wasn't just another spacewalk - it was the 20th stand-up EVA in history.
Stand-up EVA (Extravehicular Activity) is when an astronaut partially exits the spacecraft or module into outer space, while remaining in a standing position and not completely leaving the confines of the spacecraft.
Once outside his spacecraft, Isaacman philosophically remarked, “We have a lot of work to do on Earth, but it looks perfect from here.” It was a historic moment many had been waiting for - the first time commercial astronauts, without government agency involvement, had left the confines of a spacecraft.
Isaacman and Gillis went through a series of durability checks, testing the spacesuit's mobility capabilities, thermal insulation and other elements that will be important for future missions.
✨ It's not just a record, it's a step into the future ✨
Commercial space tourism once seemed like science fiction. Gradually, more and more tourists started flying into space, new companies and technologies emerged. Polaris Dawn proved that the future of space tourism is already here. This spacewalk is another step towards making space accessible to many.
Who knows, maybe soon you'll be able to take your dog for a walk not in the yard, but directly into space 😁
